Behavior In Leaders With High Self-Esteem

There are many traits to high self-esteem leaders and today I am going to share the three that I feel are the most valuable in this session.

The number one trait of a high esteem leader is that they are confident and somebody who is more talented, smarter does not threaten them, faster or more technologically savvy. They are not threatened by anyone who is better than they are. In fact, they welcome it because they recognize that their strengths are solid, they are confident in their strengths, they maximize their strengths and they are confident to know that other people’s strengths will compliment them.

A high confident leader or high self-esteem leader is so attractive to be around. Leaders who have the confidence to bring people in that are better than themselves have complete faith in their own abilities.  A high self-esteem leader knows that they can grow, expand, and increase the business profits; which means the business grows. So a high self-esteem leader is not threatened by other people’s intelligence or ability.

The second item that I believe is a trait that I see often with the clients that I work with and with the people that I coach is that they are generous. They are generous with what they know. Oftentimes, especially in times of transition and change a lot of leaders will become a little threatened by the fact that they want to keep what they know or perhaps they are worried about what is going to happen down the road and so they are holding their cards close to their chest, but really a generous leader, somebody who has high self-esteem is very generous in sharing. They share what they know; they share their knowledge with their people.

I once had a client where there was an opportunity for her to be interviewed by a high profile magazine and she instead delegated that to her colleague below her and she felt that it was a great learning opportunity for that person but she wanted to generously share the accolades. That was a very brilliant thing for her to do actually because what happened with the employee is that they absolutely blossomed with the opportunity and actually it paid off for the person that delegated it as well.

So being generous and sharing and not feeling threatened that if you share a success or that if you share something with someone else that you are going to somehow get less. High self-esteem leaders are very generous sharing what they know. I can think of a number of clients where this generosity pays off in employee loyalty but also again in profits because the whole organization thrives on the generous sharing of knowledge and transferring that knowledge from a high self-esteem leader.

The third trait of a high self-esteem leader is that they are solutions focused. They don’t get bogged down with personality challenges. They don’t get bogged down with difficult situations. They actually relish and enjoy having those situations because they see the opportunity to find solution and high self-esteem leaders are very creative because they are able to look at the situation from a broad perspective and see that okay, we have got this resource over here and we have got this person over here and it is like a chess game for them. It is like a solutions focused opportunity for them and they are always looking for ways to come up with creative solutions.

There are many traits of high self-esteem leaders and today I have shared with you the top three.
